Human rights for women campaign

FAWCO’s Human Rights Task Force is asking FAWCO clubs to find ways to support women displaced by conflict for the 16 Days of Activism Campaign, November 25 – December 10. It doesn’t matter if it is a club activity or an individual initiative, either way, women and children fleeing the ravages of war, violence and persecution will benefit.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.

Here’s how you as an individual can participate:

# 1 Collect handicraft items and send them to Theresa Dommett (Dubai) in support of the FAWCO Region 9 volunteer project with Syrian refugee women. Their focus is ‘Compassion, Friendship, Peace and Expats Sharing Experiences’.   Contact our FAWCO rep for Theresa’s address in Dubai.

# 2 Watch the 52 minute film: Beyond Right & Wrong.   This moving documentary is about conflict around the world, and what it takes to forgive under the most difficult circumstances.

# 3 Help raise awareness about the plight of displaced women following this link to get an in-depth perspective on displaced women: Are We Listening?

The report, prepared by the International Rescue Committee, describes the challenges faced by displaced Syrian women and girls in their own words: searching for clean water and food for their families, navigating foreign cities and refugee camps, avoiding harassment, encountering threats of violence at home and in the street.

# 4 Give a gift that really counts this year by supporting Save the Children and their efforts to provide relief to child refugees and their families. The Save the Children Holiday Catalogue offers 26 gifts that keep on giving.

Actress Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies, has recently been named UN Women’s Global Goodwill Ambassador. Take a few minutes to watch her incredibly inspiring speech at the United Nations headquarters to launch the HeForShe campaign against gender inequality. To watch click here.
