Happy 2016!

The New Year’s Eve fireworks are over, some of us have made resolutions, and we are returning to our expat lives. Back in the U.S., it’s time to get ready for the State of the Union address, Martin Luther King commemorations and political primaries.  Living in Doha we are keenly aware of world events, and how they affect us, and others around us. As we welcome in 2016, let’s all remember to count our blessings, keep hoping for peace, and continue to take advantage of being here in Doha, especially by celebrating new friendships and new opportunities.

The weather in Qatar has turned cooler, the days are shorter and as always happens at this time of year, the calendar of local Doha events is getting full. From championship tennis tournaments and competitive road races, to new park openings and outdoor bazaars, a variety of activities promise to engage us all.  This is the time of year to get out and enjoy Doha’s gentle winter, and to take in the diverse cultural experiences offered.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape or move more, this is the perfect time to get out and walk or jog along the corniche, play golf, kayak or paddle board. The Museum of Islamic Art offers a variety of fitness programs, as does Aspire Zone, to help you get started. Qatar’s National Sports Day is on February 9th, and a plethora of fitness activities will be planned, including a Dragon Boat Festival at Katara.

For those who are new to Doha or who need suggestions for things to do besides our AWAQ events, check out the weekly online listings such as Time Out DohaI Love Qatar Events DohaKatara Cultural Center and the Museum of Islamic Art.

AWAQ has a great year planned for 2016, and we look forward to sharing it with you all!
