Bring your family and join AWAQ to celebrate our most treasured American holiday, Thanksgiving, with the men and women in the Armed Forces who serve and protect us here in Qatar. This is an opportunity to give back to those who help maintain our freedoms, and is one of the most popular events we offer during the AWAQ year. We ask our military guests to join us on November 26th for a home cooked meal as our gift of thanks to them, and this year have invited 50 troops to join us. Celebrating the day brings us together in a meaningful and lasting way and creates one big family of expats and military personnel, allowing us to give thanks together in a foreign land. It’s always an enjoyable day for everyone – your family will have fun, your kids will have many companions, your husbands will meet others outside of their work, and you will meet other members of AWAQ.
In order to successfully plan the event we need to know:
1. Name of AWAQ member and guests attending. Please provide the names of your family members attending as we will have name tags prepared before the event. This event is for AWAQ members and their family members only. If a non-member wishes to attend, they may join AWAQ as a member by November 12. If you wish to bring any out of town guests, please contact us first.
2. What tasty dishes can you bring to share? AWAQ provides turkeys, gravy and paper goods, and each member / family attending is asked to bring a minimum of two (2) food items that serve at least 12 people each. Suggestions will be sent to you after you register, and it is required that you provide us with your food item asap because categories fill up quickly.
If you plan to attend, you must contribute to the menu. If you don’t want to cook, or don’t have the time, a simple option is to purchase something prepared from Ric’s Kountry Kitchen, and we will pick it up when we get the turkeys! Contact Ric’s at 4443-7846. We have an electronic copy of their menu and can provide it upon request. For those who don’t cook, there are also a few non-food items on the list. We mention this only because, in previous years, we had members who wanted to attend, but not contribute anything, which is not fair to the other attendees.
Additionally, it is very important that those who commit to attend actually show up, withstanding emergencies, of course. Successful planning and execution depends on it!
Please register NOW! Thanksgiving is only weeks away, so registrations are due before November 14. Shopping for any necessary food items will be easier now and things will sell out soon. This weekend, Mega Mart had Libby’s canned pumpkin… but it will go fast!
We also need members to help with decorations and general set up, so please contact Jenny Ezzo (Decoration Coordinator) if you can arrive early and assist.
